Villarreal beat Man Utd 11-10 on penalties to win their first European trophy

Chatara, Manchester United’s wait for their first trophy under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer continues after David De Gea’s spot-kick was saved at the end of a wild shootout that saw Villarreal crowned Europa League champions for the first time in the Clubs’ History.

This is the first European title in Villareal’s history and it could not have come in more dramatic circumstances, with Villareal converting all 11 of their penalty attempts, the final one was from the goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli, who then saved the penalty of United goalkeeper De Gea to secure the crown.

Villareal broke the deadlock on 28^th minute of the game with Gerard Moreno converting a perfect free-kick from Dani Parejo into a goal. With the one goal advantage, Villareal sat back and tried to defend their lead till half time.

Manchester United scored an equalizer on 54^th minute of the game when Villareal failed to clear the corner kick from United which was send into back of the net by Edinson Cavani.  

Neither side could find a winner in regular 90 minutes time so matters went to extra time. Both team defended strongly to deny any further goals so penalties had to settle things.

All outfield players scored their spot-kicks, as did Villarreal goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli before saving De Gea’s penalty to win the shootout 11-10 and secure the first major trophy in their history.
